Design & Awards

Completed in September 2003, Springstep’s state-of-the-art facility is designed specifically to support our programming, which includes community-based social dances, as well as the performances, classes, and other events. Designed by Andrew Cohen and Thom White of Andrew Cohen Architects, the building has received numerous architectural awards.

Our spacious, light-filled building is fully handicapped accessible and features three studios:

  • Hawkins Hall
  • The Orange Studio
  • The Small Studio

Each hall features a custom sound system and specialized flooring. Hawkins Hall and the Orange Studio boast floating hardwood floors and an advanced spring-cushion system engineered to reduce wear to dancers’ knees, while the Small Studio features a sprung Marley floor.

A sweeping atrium, dominated by a two-and-a-half story glass wall on the south side of the building, provides program participants with a comfortable gathering area and houses our Gallery.

"The building’s design exhibits bravery and exuberance… the heroic scale of the glass wall at the entry facade successfully establishes a civic connection with Medford City Hall across the street.”
— BSA Harleston Parker Awards Jury

"Careful attention to the program is obvious and the architect has used colors inventively and effectively throughout the interior spaces…The result is a small jewel of a building."
